Introduction
Child-resistant packaging is supposed to protect kids, not punish adults. Yet for anyone with arthritis, chronic pain, limited grip strength, or simply tired hands at the end of a long day, "push down and turn" can often feel like an obstacle course. Whilst the intention is good; the experience, very often, is not. It does't have to be that way, safety and accessibility can coexist in the same design; child-resistant packaging can evolve into something that truly protects children and respects adults.

Balancing Safety With Accessibility For People With Dexterity Challenges
Child-resistant packaging emerged as a response to a real crisis: young children getting into medications, cleaners, and other hazardous products. The logic is simple:if it's hard for a child to open, they're less likely to ingest something dangerous. However, over time, the definition of "hard for a child" has too often become "hard for almost everyone."
For people with dexterity challenges, the daily reality can look like this: a pain flare in the hands triggered by forcing down a stiff cap, repeated failed attempts to open a bottle followed by the frustration of having to ask for help, or leaving caps loosely closed "just in case" because reopening them is too difficult, which ironically reduces safety.
It's not only people with diagnosed conditions who struggle. Older adults, people recovering from injuries or surgery, new parents carrying a child in one arm, and even those with temporary fatigue may find traditional child-resistant closures exhausting.
The core design mistake is treating "adult" as a single category. In reality , adult hand function exists on a wide spectrum. Some people have strong grip and fine motor control; whereas others navigate stiffness, tremors, weakness, or pain every day. A cap that works for one end of that spectrum may be nearly impossible for the other.
A more inclusive approach begins with two equally important questions:

Does this design reliably prevent young children from opening it on their own?

Can adults with a range of abilities open and close it independently, consistently, and without excessive strain?
If the second answer is "only if they fight with it," the design isn't finished. Protecting children should not mean compromising dignity, autonomy, or comfort for adults, especially adults who may depend on those products for health or personal care.
Innovations in child-resistant designs that work for all users
The encouraging news is that thoughtful innovation is already showing how child-resistant packaging can be more inclusive, not less. Designers are moving beyond the default "push down and twist" toward mechanisms that rely on conscious action rather than sheer force.
Designing for the whole hand, not just the fingertips
Traditional safety caps often assume strong pinching and twisting motions. Inclusive packaging looks at the entire hand and asks: how can we distribute effort more comfortably?
More ergonomic options include wider caps that can be grasped with the palm and full fingers instead of a tight pinch, gently contoured shapes that nestle into the hand and provide natural leverage points, and textured edges or soft-touch finishes that reduce slipping, especially when hands are damp or lotioned.
These changes don't make a cap easier for a toddler to open,small hands still struggle to get a firm, coordinated grip. For adults, though, especially those with pain or weakness, they can transform the experience.
Rethinking the motion, not just the cap
"Push down and twist" is notoriously punishing for sore joints. Alternative motion combinations can maintain safety while broadening usability:

Squeeze-and-turn systems, where pressure is applied to larger, marked areas on the side rather than straight down;

Lift-and-align mechanisms, where the cap must be lifted and lined up with a mark before it will open;

Press-button releases, requiring understanding of the mechanism but less brute strength;
These designs still rely on intentional, coordinated actions that young children are unlikely to figure out, but they give adults more options to work around their physical limitations.
Clear cues that actually guide the user
A surprising amount of frustration comes not from the mechanism itself but from vague or invisible instructions. Many people simply aren't sure how they're supposed to open a cap, so they end up using extra force in the wrong places.
More inclusive design considers information as part of the safety system: high-contrast arrows and icons that stand out against the cap, plain-language instructions like "SQUEEZE SIDES & TURN" instead of tiny cryptic text, and tactile markers indicating where to press, squeeze, or align, useful for people with low vision or in low light.
This combination of visual and tactile cues reinforces that the package is secure because it requires a specific action, not because it is simply difficult.

Hybrid solutions for frequent-use products
Some personal care items are opened once in a while and tucked away; others are used every single day. For daily-use products, forcing users to fight a child-resistant closure every time can be unreasonable.
Hybrid approaches might include a closure that ships in "locked" mode but can be switched to a simpler open/close mode by a deliberate, one-time action, or secondary child-resistant over-caps that sit on top of a more accessible functional closure, used only when needed.
These solutions require careful messaging and storage guidance but point toward a nuanced future: not all products, in all homes, need the same level of day-to-day resistance.
Regulatory standards and accessibility considerations
Regulatory standards around child-resistant packaging are rooted in an important goal: dramatically reduce accidental poisoning in children. Typically, they define a child-resistant package as one that a certain percentage of young children cannot open during a test, while a certain percentage of adults can open and properly reclose within a set time.
On paper, that sounds balanced. In practice, however, "adult-friendly" is often interpreted very narrowly. Test panels may skew toward younger, able-bodied adults. People with arthritis, neurological conditions, or other dexterity limitations may be underrepresented or absent altogether. The result is a design that technically meets regulatory criteria while failing many real users.
Accessibility rarely appears as a clearly defined requirement. Instead, it's tucked into vague phrases like "must be difficult for children under X age to open and easy for adults to use correctly." The word "easy" here is doing a lot of quiet, unexamined work.
There's room for meaningful evolution. Regulations could begin to explicitly consider diverse adult test groups including older adults and people with documented hand function differences, functional definitions of usability such as a maximum force requirement or thresholds for how many adults need tools or assistance, and alternative compliance options allowing non-child-resistant closures for products in certain categories or for households without children, with appropriate labeling.
The goal isn't to weaken safety standards. It's to refine them so that "safe for children" doesn't inadvertently mean "unusable for many adults." When guidelines acknowledge the diversity of adult bodies, industry innovation has clearer targets to meet.
Testing protocols involving people with disabilities
One of the strongest signals that a brand truly cares about inclusive design is who they invite into their testing process. When people with disabilities are only consulted at the very end, if at all accessibility becomes a patch, not a principle.
More inclusive testing protocols might start with intentionally broad recruitment. Instead of defaulting to a convenient sample of adults, brands can proactively include people living with arthritis, tendonitis, or repetitive strain injuries, people with neurological conditions that affect coordination, strength, or tremors, older adults whose fine motor skills have changed over time, and people who regularly use adaptive tools or aids in daily life.
This isn't about tokenism. It's about recognizing that these users are part of the core audience. Their experience should shape the design as much as any other group's.
Beyond just asking "can they open it?", inclusive protocols dig deeper: How much pain or strain did they experience? Did they need to use tools like rubber grips or ask for help? Could they open it consistently, or only once with great effort? How confident did they feel using it independently?
These qualitative insights uncover problems that simple pass/fail metrics miss. A design that "technically works" might still be failing real people if it leaves them exhausted or anxious every time they reach for a product.
Designers can also bring prototypes to disability organizations, support groups, rehabilitation centers, or patient panels to get direct feedback. Instead of guessing what will help, they can ask: "What part of this motion is hardest?" "Would a larger surface or a different direction of movement be easier?" "What designs have you used in the past that felt better or worse?"
By treating people with disabilities as co-creators rather than edge cases, brands can develop packaging that feels thoughtful instead of tokenistic.
The future of inclusive safety features in personal care
Personal care products like shampoos, conditioners, lotions, serums, nail polish removers often sit in an interesting middle ground. Many aren't classified as hazardous in the way medications or strong cleaners are, but plenty still pose risks to children if ingested or misused. At the same time, these are products people use daily, often when they're tired, in pain, or rushing.
The future of inclusive child-resistant packaging in personal care will likely include several intertwined trends.
Brands may start asking, product by product: Does this truly need a child-resistant closure? If the risk is low, a standard, easy-to-open design might be both safer and more inclusive. For higher-risk items like strong essential oils, nail polish remover, or higher-concentration activities, child resistance makes sense,but can be implemented with more ergonomic mechanisms.
We may also see more modular packaging where households can choose the closure that fits their needs: standard caps for homes without young children, accessible child-resistant options for mixed households, or easily swappable systems that let users switch between modes.
Part of inclusive design is acknowledging that not every product needs to fight every user. Teaching safe storage practices like placing products on high shelves, in locked cabinets, and in designated zones. Each of these practices can reduce reliance on punishing closures while maintaining household safety.
Brands that openly communicate what they're doing and why build trust. Offering choices where regulation allow like requesting non-child-resistant caps or buying travel sizes with simpler closures can empower consumers to make decisions that work for their lives.
The shift won't happen overnight, but it's already underway. As more brands recognize that accessibility isn't a favour to a small group but a design principle that improves experiences across the board, child-resistant packaging will become less of a fight and more of a thoughtful, dignified part of daily life.
